Tips for Game Shooting
"Teaching and standing with many clients, I've got a few tips and thoughts which may be of use".
Please forgive me if any of this sounds patronising, that's certainly not my intention, it is aimed at both new infrequent people to the field and may contain some useful hints for seasoned shooters.
Tip 1
The muzzles of the gun. Many wait for the birds to come with muzzles pointing down, fearing safety, then, a big swing and onto the bird, pushing the safety catch on the way. This is very inconsistent and potentially not very safe. When you are on you're peg and action is imminent, cradle the gun with muzzles up. If you think a bird is heading you're way release safety, not as you are mounting, (I've seen two people split their thumbs doing this) Locate the bird with you're muzzles, either taking the shot or leaving, if out of you're area. This simple start procedure will lead to more consistent shooting.
Tip 2
Quickly work out the area that is safe for you to shoot in and not shooting at birds going to you're neighbor and try and stick to it. It is unfair to you're neighboring gun shooting birds closer to him on a regular basis.
Tip 3
Don't shoot at birds you're neighboring gun has missed. Occasionally you will see them knocked down but mostly they are wounded and its all very unsporting.
Tip 4
Once you have located the bird, stick with it and don't change you're mind if in you're shooting area. When there is a flush its easy to change you're mind in the heat of the moment.
Tip 5
Don't worry about how others are shooting or feel you may let them down. Try and just concentrate on you're shooting.
Tip 6
Before the birds start coming, look at the conditions. Is the wind behind you, in front, is it still or very windy. This information should change you're approach. Is it a pheasant or partridge? Many just shoot all birds the same, each condition and pheasant\partridge will be different.
Tip 7
If you on the end, 1 or 8, make sure if the bird is crossing you move you're feet. It is essential.
Tip 8
Where you kill the bird should be dependent of its height and conditions. When I teach people, even very experienced good shots, I use a box system which is easy to understand and transfer to the field.
Tip 9
A large amount of misses are due to head lifting. Is yours locked on the stock the moment you shoot?
Tip 10
Ever wondered how some people can knock two partridges out of a covey. They are not somehow super talented or gifted, they are using a technique. They are almost certainly using a system that I teach and I can teach you.
Tip 11
ABOVE ALL : Think safety, sportsmanship and respect for you're quarry.
Until the next time: good shooting!
